Sharon Teen Bedroom

Sharon Teen Bedroom

Sharon, MA

After meeting the lovely young teenager and her mom, I realized that color was going to be the defining element in this room. The challenge was in choosing a bold blue that would not seem overly juvenile or masculine while at the same time would give a cozy feeling to this over-size bedroom. The photo above the sofa is a custom-framed photo of the teen in her dance shoes.

More about this project

The main space planning challenge in this project was making this over-size bedroom feel cozy. I overcame this challenge by designing a furniture layout that divided the room into distinct sleeping, study and lounging areas, and selecting furnishings that were appropriately scaled to the room. For example: The large pendant; the king size bed; the wall-to-wall built-in storage unit; all appropriately scaled. Another approach was to create groupings of smaller furniture pieces and furnishings which combine into one larger-appearing unit. We also designed a wall to wall built in unit that created a focal point that could be viewed from the king sized bed. At the center of the unit we hang a black and white framed photo above a white sofa. The lounge area was defined by a gray and white zebra striped area rug, layered over the wall to wall carpet.
